Quinndary Weatherspoon is the Spurs’ second-round pick, but he’s the most experienced member of the draft class.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rookie Quinndary Weatherspoon says he’s in good hands playing for the Austin Spurs with Blake Ahearn coaching the team.

“He is kind of like Pop in a sense,” Weatherspoon said, referring to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “He tells you things you need to hear, not what you want to hear. He holds you accountable for every single thing you do.”

With the Spurs’ G League developmental squad off until Dec. 27, the Spurs brought Weatherspoon with them to Memphis partly because it’s so close to his hometown of Canton, Miss.

“Everybody on the team welcomed me back and took me in with open arms,” he said of being with the Spurs for the first time since the preseason.

Weatherspoon, 23, said several family members and friends are expected to make the approximately three-hour drive north to see him when the Spurs take on the Grizzlies tonight.

“It’s good to be close to home, to finally have my family see me in an NBA environment,” Weatherspoon said. “Memphis is so close to them, they can make the trip. It’s going to be a great experience…Mom and dad will show up, some high school friends.”

Drafted in the second round (49th overall) after starring for four seasons at Mississippi State, Weatherspoon signed a two-way contract with the Spurs in July that calls for him to spend as many as 45 days with the Spurs and the remainder with the Austin club.

Under Ahearn’s tutelage, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard has started 14 of 15 games in the G League and is averaging 12.7 points, a team-best 4.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals. He’s shooting 31 percent from 3-point range (13 of 42).

“It’s been great, just developing a lot of things, learning how to play with a lot of great guys,” he said. “I’m trying to embrace every moment I get.”

Weatherspoon is just one of just three players in Mississippi State history to record more than 2,000 career points. He earned All-SEC honors in his final three seasons, including a spot on the All-SEC First Team in his senior year after posting a career-best 18.5 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals.
