Roundups: Taste of Greek to open brick-and-mortar in March - Houston Chronicle

Taste of Greek moves to Brick and Mortar

Altin Mulla, owner of Taste of Greek, is moving from their food truck on Northpark Drive to Randall’s shopping center on the corner of Kingwood Drive and West Lake Houston Parkway in March.

He plans to open by March and is working on construction now. The food truck will close on the Jan. 25, and he is preparing to bring his equipment and business tools into the brick and mortar location. Mulla said he is moving to a permanent location because his food truck has had success, but it’s too much for him and his wife to continue both operations.

“It’s been very, very good,” Mulla said. “I mean, rain, cold, that’s when we decided, me and my wife, open a brick and mortar so people have an opportunity to sit down, feel like home.”

Taste of Greek offers traditional greek food, mostly street style such as gyros, baklava, moussaka and other dishes. Mulla said they would be changing their menu at the new location and will also include “home food” like beans, lentils and chicken soup.

“We’re going to update a lot of menus and a lot of hours, more hours and more days probably,” Mulla said. “Right now we work five days a week, 8 hours. It’s going to be more days and more hours basically.”

New Starbucks coming to Kingwood

Starbucks Coffee Company will be opening a new store on Kingwood Drive next year.

Located at 30130 Rock Creek Dr., Kingwood, a public file has been made with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for the building process. Starbucks reported a 7% revenue growth rate in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2019, opening over 630 new stores for a total of 31,256 stores in 82 markets globally.

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers and we are happy to confirm that we will be opening a new location in Kingwood, TX next year,” a Starbucks spokesperson said over email.

Both Kingwood Randalls will close

The two Randalls in Kingwood are expected to close by mid-February as part of a series of stores the grocer shutting down in the greater Houston area. Both Kingwood Randalls are offering a liquidation sale on various products throughout the stores.

Randalls will close five grocery stores in Clear Lake, Kingwood, Spring and The Woodlands next month, continuing its retreat from the region’s hyper-competitive grocery market. The Houston-based company on Monday said it will shutter its stores at 4540 Kingwood Drive and 600 Kingwood Drive in Kingwood; 2250 Buckthorne Place in Spring, 4775 West Panther Creek in The Woodlands and 2323 Clear Lake City Boulevard in Houston.

Liquidation sales will start Jan. 15, and the stores are expected to close Feb. 15. The closures will impact 365 employees.

"In such a competitive environment, our company must sometimes make tough decisions to close underperforming stores so that we can reinvest in our remaining stores in the marketplace," Randalls spokeswoman Christy Lara said in a statement. "We are working diligently to place as many employees as possible in other locations, and we remain committed to the Houston market area."

Randalls, a unit of the national supermarket company Albertsons, has struggled in recent years to compete with regional and national chains offering lower prices and wider selections. The Houston chain closed six stores last year, and after the five closures next month will bring its local footprint to 17, down from 51 locations in 2005.

Today, the grocer has less than 4 percent of the local grocery market share while market leaders H-E-B, Kroger and Walmart each have about a quarter, according to Shelby, a grocery industry research firm. The Kingwood location sits across from an H-E-B, a grocery chain that reported $28 billion in annual sales and employs 120,000 people according to the company’s newsroom website.
