Bill Belichick got taste of his own medicine from Mike Vrabel - New York Post

Bill Belichick had no problem dishing it out, but he can’t seem to take it.

Mike Vrabel, the Titans coach who played linebacker for the Patriots under Belichick, used one of Belichick’s tactics against him in the Patriots’ 20-13 AFC wild-card loss Saturday night.

With the Titans leading 14-13, they took consecutive fourth-down penalties in the fourth quarter to take nearly two minutes off the clock, a delay-of-game penalty and a false start — followed by a Patriots neutral-zone infraction — before finally punting the ball away with about 4:50 left. The game clock restarts after penalties during the first 10 minutes of a quarter. Inside of five minutes remaining, the game clock stops after a penalty.

The strategy had Belichick raving mad on the Patriots sideline, an ironic twist after Belichick used the same tactic against the Jets in October, even smiling at what he admitted was a loophole in the NFL rulebook.

“It was just the way the rules are set up. We were able to run quite a bit of time off the clock without really having to do anything. That’s probably a loophole that will be closed and probably should be closed but right now it’s open,” Belichick said in October after the Jets game.

At his season-ending press conference Sunday morning, Belichick said he was unhappy with “the explanation on how the situation was handled,” but wouldn’t elaborate on what the officials told him.
