PADUCAH (WSIL) -- There's a brewery in town that's making a name for itself both nationally and internationally.
Todd Blume started off as homebrewer and had the idea to turn his hobby into a business.
He renovated an old 1960s Greyhound bus station into his very own brewery, Paducah Beer Werks.
The brewery opened in 2015 but Blume paid homage to the building's past and kept some original pieces associated with the bus station.
Those include storage lockers, ticket window signs, and an old payphone.
Blume started off small with four main beers and has grown to now offer a selection of 35 different beers.
Some of those include:
- Irish Red - Sweeter, malty beer
- The Dude Pilsner - Light lager, similar to domestic beers
- IPA - Balance between malty and hoppy
- Pale Ale - English, brewed two-style
Just six months after opening, Blume's Pale Ale won at the Great American Beer Festival, which is the largest of its type in the country.
Since then, his Robust Porter won at the prestigious Dublin Cup in Ireland.
While Other brews have topped out at the Commonwealth Cup in Kentucky and the New York International Beer Competition.
However, Paducah Beer werks is more than a brewery as food is also served.
Anita White is the chef at the brewpub and has made quite a diverse menu for customers.
Some items include salads with fried goat cheese (yum!), a wing platter with all homemade sauces and burgers.
Brooke tried a signature pizza with sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic cloves, prosciutto, mushrooms and sriracha sausage topped with mozzarella cheese.
Another plus is that the dough is made fresh, in-house every day.
White made several German dishes off the menu that are actually family recipes.
She grew up in Germany and did not leave for the states until she was 23. Although the cook has no formal training, she learned to make the meals from her parents.
One of those dishes that Brooke got a taste of is the grilled frank and bratwurst accompanied with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with gravy.
The bratwurst is cured in The Dude Pilsner and served with homemade beer mustard.
Last, but certainly not least, Brooke sampled the schnitzel.
It's a breaded pork loin chop that is fried until its golden and smothered in a mushroom gravy.
The chop is placed atop a bed of German egg noodles that are tossed in butter.
BROOKE'S PICK:
You come to Paducah Beer Werks for the brews, but you definitely want to stay around for the food. This is the perfect brewery for those just getting into beer with lighter options like The Dude Pilsner to the Robust Porter for the craft beer enthusiast. Now I really liked the flavor combinations of the pizza (and all the garlic) but you have to try the authentic German dishes. My favorite was the pork schnitzel because of that creamy mushroom gravy, which in the future, I would order another side of. I normally despise mushrooms so that speaks... or should I say tastes.. volumes!
The brewery's current website is under construction, but you can find more information on their Facebook page here.
