Located in the heart of the East Village, a new french brasserie has
recently opened their doors.Offering their clientele french classic
dishes with a contemporary American twist, Brasserie Saint Marc is about to
explode onto the NYC food scene.
The owner, Karin Agstam, an international model from
Sweden as well as an interior design wiz, dedicates her styling to be
equally innovative and iconic. The restaurant boasts natural beauty with bare
stone and brick walls juxtaposed with elegant crystal chandeliers and a
plethora of silk flowers. The architecture includes large french doors which
combined with the music of softly singing chanteuses create what one patron refers
to as a "chill"atmosphere.
Opened in October of 2019, Brasserie Saint Marc is equipped with the
expertise of master Chef Frederick Piccarello. The food we tasted stunned our
palettes almost as though we were transplanted to Paris for the evening indeed.
For an appetizer, my dining partner ordered Gratinee l'Onion,
classic homemade onion soup. Being an expert in french cuisine,
she knew right away that it was excellent beyond measure and
generously shared it with me. It was by far the best onion soup
I ever had. I gobbled it down as though it was ambrosia for the gods.
Finally, I asked the service what was in it? They replied,
"Brandy and Sherry." My dining partner also added that the very
deep caramelizing of the onions made the flavoring so rich
and exceptional.
For my main course, I ordered the Duck Confit. This consisted of a
Hudson Valley Rohan duck leg, brined in salt, garlic and herbs,
served with baby Yukon Gold potatoes, walnuts and a fig gastrique.
The meat fell from the bones, so tender and tasty especially
when dipped in the fig sauce. It was hearty and elegant at once,
perfect for a winter evening. The presentation was complete artistry,
showing me the great care put into every aspect of the dish.
You can be sure I finished everything on my plate!
Another concept which I must point out is the restaurant's humble
nod to the neighborhood, also known to many as the Ukrainian Village.
Thus, they serve several Ukrainian dishes. At owner Karin's suggestion,
we were served the locally handmade Varenky (pierogies)
which are artisan potato and cheese dumplings with sides of sour
cream and caramelized onions. Karin said they were made locally
and exclusively for the restaurant daily. My dining partner adored these,
describing their delicate nature and flavor which the onions
brought out in the potato filling. What a surprising win!
Please do enjoy this ascending star and of course Bon Appetite from
the bottom of our hearts. Your taste buds will be thrilled from start to finish.
