The 10 best recipes from the 2019 San Antonio Express-News Taste food section - San Antonio Express-News

The Taste Team’s kitchens were red-hot in 2019 with a zesty variety of dishes covering everything from appetizers to desserts. To celebrate, we’ve rounded up our 10 of our favorite recipes of the year, and are sure they’ll keep your bellies full.

This collection of cookery wasn’t just a hit with us — it was a hit with you, as well.

These dishes represent some of the most well-read, widely shared and frequently commented on of the year. Most of these recipes were developed by Express-News Taste team members Chuck Blount, Emily Spicer and Paul Stephen. One came directly from a reader, while another — a classic carne guisada — was just too popular to not include.

From our kitchens to yours, may 2020 be every bit as delicious.

.

Avocado Cheesecake: San Antonio made its obsession with avocados more than clear to us this year, so we developed a quartet of dessert recipes to celebrate the fruit’s creamy goodness in unusual ways. This simple, no-bake cheesecake was the best of the bunch. Click here for the recipe.

On ExpressNews.com: You will have to pry avocados out of San Antonio’s cold, dead hands

.

Charcoal Smoked Pulled Pork: No smoker, no problem with this take on pulled pork that turns any regular backyard grill into a low-and-slow cooker that can stay hot for up to 12 hours. Click here for recipe.

Chicken Schnitzel with Loquats: We were astonished to learn just how much interest San Antonio has in loquats, which ripen on area shrubberies in early spring. This sweet-and-sour recipe puts them to good use in a way that also pays tribute to the region’s German roots. Click here for the recipe.

.

On ExpressNews.com: Loquats are the delicious fruit all of San Antonio needs to be eating now

Classic Carne Guisada: This savory beef stew is a timeless classic in the Alamo City, and this version was by far the favorite in a story we published showcasing four different takes on the dish. Click here for the recipe.

.

Fideo Loco: This puro San Antonio recipe has been in Fideo Loco Festival founder Roxanne Quintero’s family for generations, and she was kind enough to share it with us. Y’all didn’t seem to mind, because it was one of our most read recipes of the year. Click here for the recipe.

.

On ExpressNews.com: San Antonio millennials have gone loco for fideo

Green Chile and Sausage Queso: This quesp wins the snack table. Potlucks, game day, New Year’s Eve — whatever the occasion, if it calls for queso, make it this one. And from the comments we got, you did. Click here for the recipe.

.

Grilled Tomahawk Steaks: These thick beef clubs are all the rage, and cooking them properly over a piping hot grill will make you the king or queen of the cul-de-sac. Click here for the recipe.

.

On ExpressNews.com: Tomahawk steaks make for a supreme beef-eating experience

Puro San Antonio Spicy Pimento Cheese: This pimento cheese combines the creamy goodness of the Southern classic with the spicy flavors of San Antonio and South Texas. It generated the most comments and readers reporting back that they made it and loved it. Click here for the recipe.

.

Tex-Mex Tomato Pie: Tomato pie, along with other Southern staples, showed up in a couple new area restaurants this year. We decided to give it a spicy San Antonio twist, and this zippy delight was the result. Click here for the recipe.

.

Texas Twinkies: Loaded with brisket, cream cheese, jalapeños and, of course, bacon, it’s an appetizer that celebrates all of those favorite things. These hearty snacks were also one of our most-viewed dishes of the year. Click here for the recipe.
