The newly snow-topped San Gabriel mountains acted as a stunning backdrop Saturday afternoon, Dec. 28, as Pasadena welcomed families from all over the region to kick off its Rose Bowl weekend.
The Sip & Savor Pasadena three-day food and beverage shindig is only two years old but it’s already drawing enthusiastic — and ravenous– crowds.
Roughly 200 people were in attendance Saturday at the event, which features a vast array of music, food, games and adult beverages. And that was only at opening, the event lasted from noon until 7 p.m.
Organizers of the event were looking for a way for more locals and out-of-towners to participate in the weekend’s events other than camping out for the iconic parade.
“It started two years ago, more for the families during parade week,” said Heidi Hoff, senior director of marketing and public relations for AES Event Group, who organized the event. “So families could participate and out-of-towners could get a taste of L.A.”
The all-ages event features 17 different local food vendors, seven wineries, four breweries and four retail shops. Along with a main stage that showcases different genres of music from jazz to mariachi. And there’s even a magician scheduled to perform all three days.
Many attendees opted for the V.I.P. tickets, going for $125, which include early entry and unlimited food and drinks. General admission tickets run $50 and include five tastings for both food and drinks.
“The number of tastings and the ability to get in early,” were important to Ben Alexander of Orange County who opted for the V.I.P. experience with his friends. “We’re not the (general admission) type.”
But while Alexander and his friends enjoy the social aspect of parade weekend at Sip & Savor Pasadena they said they will not be participating in anything else parade-oriented — and they actually plan to avoid Pasadena entirely after Saturday.
“We’re going to watch from afar,” he said.
Gina Martinez of Lawndale made the trek to meet up with some girlfriends, they said, because love social events, especially the ones that feature food and wine.
“Some friends of mine were here last year so we decided to come out. (After this) we’re going to go see the floats,” she said. “All those flowers on there — it’s amazing.”
Speaking of food and drink … One of two Rose Bowl trophies on display during Sip and Savor Pasadena was whisked away to make an appearance at the Lawry’s Beef Bowl, an annual chowdown featuring the foes in the big game. This year, it’s Oregon and Wisconsin.
