SAGINAW, MI — La Unión Cívica Mexicana will host Saginaw’s 11th annual Tamale Taste-Off.
Tamale lovers are invited to attend the annual event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22 at Nouvel Elementary School, 2136 Berberovich.
Attendees will sample each vendor and vote for the best tasting tamales. The Best Tamale and People’s Choice awards will be given out this year. Tamales will also be sold by the half or whole dozen. The entry fee is $5.
La Unión Cívica Mexicana is hosting the event to showcase the area’s tamale experts. Tamale vendors from Saginaw and Midland will participate in the fiesta.
“It’s nice to see that this event is growing and that there is even vendors from outside of Saginaw,” said Unión Cívica President Angela Blanco. “We are displaying a great tradition that originated with the great Aztec and Mayan cultures and want to educate the community on what is a good tamal. We invite the community to have a great tamale experience.”
The following tamale vendors are participating: Saginaw’s T & T Concessions, Cruz Kitchen, El Farolito Restaurant and the Union Civica Mexicana, and a few individual tamale culinary experts in the community: Berta’s Tamales, Chelita’s Tamales and Pina’s Tamales. More are expected to join as vendors.
Several “bazar vendors” will have tables with representatives from Pampered Chef, Avon, Tupperware, One Big Cookie, Chula’s Mexican Imports and more.
Over the years, the event has attracted hundreds of people, according to event organizers.
